Weight Loss Surgery and Breast Reduction: Which Comes First?
For very overweight women considering both bariatric procedures and breast reduction surgery, it may be difficult to know which procedure they should undergo first.
I have long believed the best results are achieved when weight loss comes first and now new research shows that is indeed the case.
The study found that after massive weight loss, 86 percent of the women surveyed who previously had reduction mammaplasty thought their breasts looked worse. This could be because the weight loss caused further shrinkage of the breasts, leading to excess skin and other changes. This is also true for patients who didn’t have a previous breast reduction. Looking Good at Any Age
Can you be too old for plastic surgery?
A recent New York Times story explored the issue of older patients and plastic surgery procedures.
The article profiled some patients in their 70s and 80s who were satisfied with procedures such as breast augmentation, facelifts and eyelid surgery.
This doesn’t surprise me a bit. People are living longer and remaining in good health. They want to look as young as they feel.
According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics, in 2010 there were 349,237 surgical procedures among patients age 55 and older. Continue reading “Looking Good at Any Age” »
FDA Reaffirms Breast Implant Safety
Good news for women with or seeking silicone gel-filled breast implants. The Food and Drug Administration has reaffirmed their safety and effectiveness.
When the Food and Drug Administration allowed silicone gel-filled breast implants back on the market in November 2006, the agency required the manufacturers to conduct follow-up studies to learn more about the long-term performance and safety of the devices.
The FDA has released a new report that includes preliminary safety data from these studies and the data shows these implants are safe when used as intended.
It reports that studies to date do not indicate that silicone gel-filled breast implants cause breast cancer, reproductive problems, or connective tissue disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis. For many patients who are considering breast augmentation or corrective breast surgery, this report should bring reassurance.
However, there are important issues that every woman should be aware of when it comes to silicone gel-filled breast implants. Continue reading “FDA Reaffirms Breast Implant Safety” »
FAT, A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!
Fat grafting techniques have advanced with spectacular results!
When I was a resident training in General Surgery in the eighties, fat was an undesirable thing. It got in the way of performing surgical procedures. You couldn’t suture through it because it wouldn’t hold; and the thicker the fat, the more likely wound issues would occur such as break down or infection.
During my training and early in my career as a Plastic Surgeon, fat was what you removed to create contour and you happily saw it going away in the suction tubing or specimen bucket.
At the time, my mentors told me that fat grafting didn’t work, that it provided a temporary filling effect but that it eventually reabsorbed. I read about different methods of grafting fat at the time, but the grafts were all doomed to disappear eventually. The general consensus then was that fat grafting was a waste of time.
Then in the early nineties, I had the opportunity to see the work of Sidney Coleman, M.D. and I saw the light! I became convinced that fat grafting was indeed an effective form of treatment. Doctor Coleman emphasized that the meticulous way in which the fat is harvested and later grafted was critical to the success of the grafting process. Top Three Plastic Surgery Procedures to Advance Your Career
Numerous studies have shown that appearance does matter when it comes to the world of business. Certainly, there are those who have attained great confidence and accomplishment, regardless of their looks. But many, especially among baby boomers, feel that sustaining a more youthful, refreshed look can enable them to retain a solid career footing, especially in youth-oriented industries.
I am always being asked, “What are the best procedures for one’s career? ” Unfortunately there is no one simple answer for that question. But the answer is as varied as those who may ask it. I also like to caution anyone considering plastic surgery that you should only undergo plastic surgery because it is something that you want to do for yourself and not for others.
To be a good candidate for plastic surgery you must not have unrealistic expections regarding the outcomes such as: expecting your spouse or significant other to like you better because you had surgery, doing it for others or expecting acceptance, promotions or the ability to get a job you couldn’t otherwise, just because you had plastic surgery.
Still, with that in mind, an edge at work can be the result of successful rejuvenating surgery, improved appearance or simply the enhancement in self confidence that results from such surgery. It’s a tricky paradigm.
All of that said, there are some plastic surgery procedures that seem to be especially popular among my Oklahoma City career-oriented patients. Here’s a quick look at some of those: Continue reading “Top Three Plastic Surgery Procedures to Advance Your Career” »
