Weight Loss Surgery and Breast Reduction: Which Comes First?

For very overweight women considering both bariatric procedures and breast reduction surgery, it may be difficult to know which procedure they should undergo first.

I have long believed the best results are achieved when weight loss comes first and now new research shows that is indeed the case.

The study found that after massive weight loss, 86 percent of the women surveyed who previously had reduction mammaplasty thought their breasts looked worse. This could be because the weight loss caused further shrinkage of the breasts, leading to excess skin and other changes. This is also true for patients who didn’t have a previous breast reduction. Looking Good at Any Age

Can you be too old for plastic surgery?

A recent New York Times story explored the issue of older patients and plastic surgery procedures.
The article profiled some patients in their 70s and 80s who were satisfied with procedures such as breast augmentation, facelifts and eyelid surgery.

This doesn’t surprise me a bit. People are living longer and remaining in good health. They want to look as young as they feel.

According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics, in 2010 there were 349,237 surgical procedures among patients age 55 and older. Continue reading “Looking Good at Any Age” »

FAT, A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!

Fat grafting techniques have advanced with spectacular results!

When I was a resident training in General Surgery in the eighties, fat was an undesirable thing. It got in the way of performing surgical procedures.  You couldn’t suture through it because it wouldn’t hold; and the thicker the fat, the more likely wound issues would occur such as break down or infection.

During my training and early in my career as a Plastic Surgeon, fat was what you removed to create contour and you happily saw it going away in the suction tubing or specimen bucket.

At the time, my mentors told me that fat grafting didn’t work, that it provided a temporary filling effect but that it eventually reabsorbed.  I read about different methods of grafting fat at the time, but the grafts were all doomed to disappear eventually. The general consensus then was that fat grafting was a waste of time.

Then in the early nineties, I had the opportunity to see the work of Sidney Coleman, M.D. and I saw the light! I became convinced that fat grafting was indeed an effective form of treatment.  Doctor Coleman emphasized that the meticulous way in which the fat is harvested and later grafted was critical to the success of the grafting process. Men Like to Look Good Too!

Here’s a trend that’s not surprising to me and my colleagues — More men are choosing to undergo plastic surgery to improve their appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic procedures were up 2 percent last year compared to 2009. Last year, men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical.

Some procedures had significant increases. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 while male liposuction increased 7 percent.

The majority of the Men’s Top 10 fastest-growing cosmetic procedures are surgical, which bucks the previous trend of growth in minimally-invasive treatments.

Baby boomers are helping drive the growth in cosmetic surgical procedures. Our typical male cosmetic surgery patient is an average guy who takes care of himself and wants to look as good as he feels. As age and gravity take over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary to show significant improvement.

Here’s a look at some of the key statistics involving men from the ASPS: Continue reading “Men Like to Look Good Too!” »

Do Plastic Surgery Increases Point to Economic Recovery?

Have you thought about plastic surgery?  Are you considering undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure this year or next?

If you answered yes to either question, you are not alone. In fact, an upward trend in the number of cosmetic procedures performed last year may be another harbinger of economic improvement in this country.

The latest numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show 13.1 million cosmetic surgeries and minimally-invasive procedures were conducted in 2010. That represents a 5 percent increase over the previous year. Continue reading “Do Plastic Surgery Increases Point to Economic Recovery?” »
